Wow. Tonight I had the totally amazing opportunity to dine at the Black Pearl restaurant in Bellingham, WA for the first time. It is owned by a lovely and vibrant young lady named Laila (pictured with me below), and I found the combination of the food, beverages and her company to be totally intoxicating. It probably didn’t help that I drained a delicious glass of house red like water, immediately followed by THE BEST GLASS OF ICED COFFEE I HAVE EVER HAD, IN MY LIFE, PERIOD. So my senses were just ka-booming. How good can iced coffee be? You have no idea until you try Laila’s special blend. It totally blew my mind. I could literally feel the essence of the beans in my blood; the taste was so rich and deep, I was honestly shocked and thrilled by it. I actually had to set the glass down and look at my friend Kamal Deep Singh (who was working on a glorious feast of curried chicken, fluffy brown rice and a bouquet of luscious mixed greens), and say “DEAR GOD THIS IS AMAZING.” That’s how good the iced coffee was.
The lighting in this shot kind of makes it look like a painting to me. Laila is an angel, and I look like such a classic sleaze, wow. I call it “Still Life with Goddess and Car Salesman.” No offense meant to the car salesmen who actually give the industry a good name. God bless you, seriously.
I loved the laid back atmosphere of the restaurant. I think the owner has a wonderful presence and it comes across in the amazing and fun array of Asian cuisine and wildly original beverages to be had. By the way, if you’re a fan of Pho (a Vietnamese Soup), I’ve heard that the Black Pearl’s is to die for. I look forward to trying it out, that’s next on my list. The Black Pearl was voted as one of the best restaurants in Bellingham in the 2011 Bellingham Herald reader’s opinion poll for a reason!
